Dear Winter

I can't do this anymore. It's time for "us" to be over. We both know it.

When I met you in November, I was totally into you. I'll admit that you helped me see the crisp of the earth in a totally different way. Washed all the dust of Augusts away, and gave me a sense of comfort for being wrapped in warmth in front of my fire.

Because of you I went skating, rekindled my love for hot chocolate, cozied up under piles of blankets and watch my favorite old movies, spent evenings in concocting great meals. You know how I love the sensuality of the simmering pots on the stove top.

Christmas vacation was amazing, and I know that had a lot to do with you. Without you, none of those things wouldn't have happened. I know that. And it's not like those times weren't great. But it's time to move on. And you know why.

For one thing, I'm starting to grow weary of the clothes you force me to wear. I have my own sense of style you know. And it doesn't include wearing every garment in my closet day after day. It doesn't include schlumping around in those horrible boots you insist on, either. I mean, give it a rest already! How about you let me wear a pair of open toe shoes for a change? I'm ready for 3-4 inches of love with out cleaning the mud off the tips of my toes. Or maybe even clothing that shows I'm a woman, and not an androgynous lump. I am SO over your tyrannical and unsightly fashion sense.

And then there's your coldness towards me. There have been so many days in the past months when things have been great - my job, my friends, my family. And then WHAM - your coldness slams into me and chills me to the bone. When you do that, it makes me feel like I have nothing to live for. And we both know that's just not true! I can't continue to let you affect my outlook on life in this way. It's unhealthy, and I'm not putting up with it any more.

You don't give me flowers anymore... they just wilt in your presence. Hell even the "birds and the bees" aren't, shall we say, pollinating at this time.

I don't want to be a jerk or anything. And after the fun times we've had, I hate to hurt your feelings. But you deserve to know that I've got my heart set on someone new. Someone who will let me wear skirts, and encourage me to get outside more often. Someone who will make me feel lighter and freer.

My friends and family keep mentioning that this new relationship is just around the corner, if only I can get rid of you. So please. Stop tapping on my window. Stop showing up at my office after work. I'm moving on.

My Mama's Love: Grieving marriage for the sake of happiness

An amazing post that captures my heart on letting go of the fantasy. And finding the wonder of what it is truly.

My Mama's Love: Grieving marriage for the sake of happiness

My Journey into Organic Living

I've always been a believer in homemade food. Wonderfully prepared, not ultra processed.... regional, seasonal foods.

Seasonal- Buying food that is in season from Farmers Markets ups not only the quality and taste, but eliminates the need to import foreign fruits and veggies that have been grown in questionable conditions and with liberal pesticide regulations. Would you eat from a fruit stand in Mexico? Not if you like the color of your drawers! Imported fruit is not much different.

*Seasonal is not forced to grow out of season... straining the earth even more by forcing it to produce year round.... God made the earth to rest in certain seasons. I have to say I saw watermelon in the store today. It's February.

Local- Though I cannot say I am 100%, I do attempt to remain as local on the majority of my produce and meats. Why?

*I support my local growers that grow quality products, and maintain a small family farms. I can see how they grow their produce, be assured of the passion that lives in a small family farm. Major farms are often owned by grocery conglomerates and subsidized to NOT grow by you and your tax dollars. (Walmart has started to offer organic foods in there stores... Exciting? The masses eating organic? NO! Walmart as the mighty evil is using their major $ and power to change the organic laws for EVERYONE! Basically, by the time they are done the item will no longer be organic because they want cheap and it takes more work to grow organically. They don't care about you.) A small family farm bases their existance on their foods and care about what they produce. They have dedicated a fairly non profitable to life to doing what they love. Local farms and food producers are crucial to a healthy and diversified economy. While dollars spent with large corporations almost immediately leave the community, dollars spent on local food products circulate within the community eight to fifteen times, drastically improving the value of your purchase.

*Economic Diversity. Diversified local economies are less susceptible to outside events (e.g. energy costs).

*Less Waste and Pollution
Local food means fewer food miles and dramatically reducing transportation, days of refrigeration, and tons of pollution and packaging. Unlike most food in the US that travels 1500 miles and from seven to fourteen days in transport to reach your plate, local food is usually harvested within 24 hours of the time you buy it. How fresh and healthy would you feel after a week on a truck?

*They often use native plants which saves a valuable resource that is becoming eliminated by hybrid, high producing, big farm products. Native seeds are virtually being eliminated. They are resistant to fungus, disease and many other conditions such as drought. Hybrid seeds rape the soil, overuse the water supply, and have NO resistance to disease or drought. What happens when we have a world wide disease that wipes out virtually all of the rice, wheat, corn and other items that we use daily. Overkill? Not really, it is HIGHLY likely! There are groups such as Seeds of Change that attempt to change this outcome by members and companies growing these native seeds to keep the stock alive. With the fall of the USSR thousands of seed banks fell apart and millions of seeds were lost forever. There is a reason that these seed banks exist, and government support of major seed stock is actually a good sign to realize the importance of this issue. Bottom line a native seeds grows in your area because it can be supported naturally by your area.

Did you know that the majority of the apples you buy at the supermarket have been in cold storage and are REALLY old? Yup. The good fresh ones get sent to Japan etc. Not at your local farmers market!

So why Organic?
* Well there are a million health reasons, but frankly I am just TIRED of being pumped full of hormones and pesticides. I am tired of ruining the natural balance of the earth.

I am not a tree hugger. I am not a vegan. I am realistic about the extended costs of Organic, Free Range etc. I am poor. ;)

So here is the steps I am taking.... thus far.

---I'm starting with the local, seasonal. NOT expensive! Farmers markets offer perfect veggies, and fruits inexpensively.

--- Find a egg seller, they are somewhere in every town. Keep your eyes peeled for a little sign that says says EGGS on the side of the road. They have their own chickens and most likely cannot use the amount of eggs produced. They are fresh, and cheaper than the super market. NO hormones! Roaming free range chickens! Easy.

--- If I buy produce that is not local...it happens... I like some of the flavors of the world! I buy organic, especially if I eat the whole thing.( i.e. I do not have to peel it first. )

--- Organic milk- easy. I can afford that. I have a friend who has only given her daughter organic milk since she started drinking it. I had not even considered the effect of all the hormones on such small children seriously.
They also are coming out with studies that adult acne is caused by the hormones pumped into our systems day after day.
Weight loss. My mother takes steroids for her disease. They make her instantly gain 50 lbs. She has passed 350lbs now. What do you think the steroids and hormones that are convincing a cow she is permanently with child do to your body?

--- It almost suprises me to say it, but cook, BBQ! If you can't be convinced to cook at least the majority of the week... Watch Super Size ME! It's not hard. Taco salad? Crock pot? Let it cook while you are away! Chicken? Spaghetti? Easy!

---Teach children how to grow food — Plant a vegetable garden with children and help them plan and prepare a meal.

In the future-

--- I will attempt to grow my own items, invest in a bison or a cow with a friend, and share the costs of raising it.

--- Grow my produce! I want to maintain my own garden. Organically. Shared garden?

--- Join a farm co-op! Lately it's become a popular and successful undertaking for farmers selling everything from dairy products to fresh produce. Co-ops allow family farmers to combine their efforts, avoid the retail market and earn more money for their products by selling directly to consumers. While farmers in co-ops take control of their business, they need to do more, like market their products, and establish a delivery system. These extras cost money. That means customers can sometimes pay more than they would at the grocery store. As the movement grows it will lower in cost. I thouroughly believe in the worth.

* Heres the breakdown-
You purchase a “share” from a farm, which
entitles you to weekly deliveries of fresh produce
throughout a designated season. You pick
up your share at the farm or at a convenient drop
off site. This arrangement gives you access to
the freshest produce available at reasonable
prices and a direct connection to “your” farm
and food source. Farmers benefit by having a
reliablemarket and a direct relationship with
their customers.

The wierdest Wedding!

The weirdest Wedding! Current mood: amused
I have to vent on this wedding I attended this weekend! It was so out of this world I am still in shock!
Location: Flaming Geyser Park
Theme: Hawaiian
Overall Feeling- Berserk! Remind me to never get married if this is what it is like!
Okay so I arrive 5 minutes late thinking what a putz! But no the groom is sitting on a bench with his head in his hands pouting that he has a headache.. and the bride is wandering around in her bikini. This goes on for an HOUR! We are just sitting there going "um what are we doing?" Finally someone says "okay have a seat". Come to find out you were supposed to bring your own chair! Everyone finally mingles in sitting on laps and the dead brown grass, and NOTHING happens. We just sit there. The sun beating down, no one speakingjust sitting some more. Finally, someone says "where are the groomsmen?" I don't know... Everyone is shouting, carrying on, searching. No one has any idea. 10 minutes later they appear beer run to the store in hand. Nice!
Okay so we are ready. The bride goes into a little tent thingy to (by tent I mean a blow up Hawaiian decor arch, with black plastic garbage bags duct taped to the front and rear)...uhhh appear I guess. Keeping in mind she has her hair done up, and has added one of those clip on extension things that are multy colored. So she stands there in her plastic blowup archway/tent and starts screaming "Mom turn on the music, MOM, Mom turn on the music." Who promptly does nothing! So the crowd just starts humming the wedding march after a minute of horrid silence. "Dum dumm dum dum, dum dum dum dum" But here is the funny part.. ****hum "Here comes the bride all dressed in white" **** She leaps out of her blow up tent/archway and promptly leaves her hairpiece on the doorway. She screams says "STOP" and runs back to get it and put it back on! We have to start the processional Hum AGAIN!
By this time I am dying! I can barely contain myself! The rest of the crowd is completely calm. I didn't make a sound but internally I am in hysterics! Brie and I are looking at each other for support.
They procede and I believe what the minister had to say was nice, but no one else could hear it for the whole 15 minutes it was a wedding, and the picnics carried on, and planes flew overhead. The good news is they bride and groom weren't even looking at each other so the didn't need to hear either. At one point I know he said to look into each others eyes and say some words... The groom had his sunglasses on and wouldn't take them off, so I guess they stared at their own reflections. They were supposed to join hands and say their vows... so they held one hand and staired at the ground, or up at the sky, sometimes they made faces, and once they actually looked at each other! Finally he announced they were married and could kiss the bride. Um he didn't... I think he forgot.
Holy hell! I think I have had about enough of weddings for awhile. So if you know of a good one maybe I can be redeemed. But until then if I have to provide my own chair, if we are supposed to float down the river, and bring our own food... I think I will pass. Oh, and if you're not really into your wedding, just DON'T get married! Save us the divorce fees.

Words to live by-Simplify, Live, Love, Laugh

GEORGE CARLIN (His wife recently died...)

A wonderful Message by George Carlin:

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways , but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things.

We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer , to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete...

Remember; spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever.

Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.

Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent.

Remember, to say, "I love you" to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you.

Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.

Give time to love, give time to speak! And give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

George Carlin

My Life-- Sometimes I need to watch

There are times when even optomistic me has to step aside from my self doubt and frustration. And even though I will always tell you I am so blessed in my life there are days that I weap. Sometimes I have to ask God, "Why do I have to do it by myself..... All the time?"

One day I looked back through my tears at the slide that I had created, and realized that I may need to spend a little time in my photo albums. I may need to forcefeed myself what I was missing. That I do it with God! And in that knowledge look at the blessings he has provided me. I have travelled around the world, have a great daughter who ministers Bible verses to me when I am in need, I have a nice "not falling apart" home that he GAVE me, and I am in need of nothing!

So God, thank you for being my father, my dad, my love, and my friend!

Sea

So this sounds silly, but I told Brie I would let you all know about the sea turtle we saw out in the Pacific yesterday. We were about 190 ft of water and we saw the most MASSIVE sea turtle! It was the size of my CRV! We tryed fishing around it for quite awhile... To be honest we just stared at it, and could not help but be amazed at the size. When it popped its head above the water for air and sucked in a large breath of air... it was just floating baking in the sun... it makes the loudest whoosing noise like when a whale blows. Okay so I know it is fairly cheesy but I have to tell you there is something very real about being on the ocean... for one everytime you are there something reminds you to respect it. The power, how fast the weather changes.... 20 ft waves in a 20 ft boat. But also everytime I am out there I see something... some mammal, some amazing creature that I, well knew was there just never realized they were HERE so close! I pictured them in the deep deep sea, or floating around the Galapagos. Right next us out in the sea! Whales, strange dinosaur fish, massive sea turtles. I am not a tree hugger but if you can't love the dirt, remember where it all flows eventually and how close we all are in the end.

Kids are spoiled (I mean well loved). aka Brie's Birthday.

Okay so how spoiled are kids truly these days... when you tell them that you got a bike for your birthday, they answer " Is that all!"

They have boutiques just for kids! I not talking about Toys R Us... I mean really expensive, specialty stores! I am talking $500 puppies in toats, and diamond studded cell phones. Their labels say things like "I love shopping" (George W. apperantly helped them market this) so we train them early to be little Hilton's! I really like to be critical of it, because I took Brie there for her birthday and she had a GREAT time. And of course you know I can't handle not despising something that I am part of. Because the real truth is if the tiara fits, wear it. Anyway so here it is!

Brie had the most fabulous birthday party at Club Libby Lu! Her and 4 girlfriends dressed up and danced and made their own perfume.

Later we went to the Spaghetti Factory (if they say they take reservations over 10 they don't actually mean on a convenient day like Saturday). We had about 30 people there, and let me tell you this is a much better option than Chucky Cheese even if you have to wait an hour. The adults can have a glass of wine, and there are not as many screaming children, oh yeah and food is good and cheap.

I have to say I REALLY enjoyed having the whole family together!

Brie Learns to Ski!

You would not believe how great Brie was at skiing! She was up and running after an hour. Swoosh, swoosh, swoosh!

By the second day up we were going down all the hills! Even advanced! Thank goodness, because I am not the most patient person sometimes, and I thought I would cry if we spent all our time on the bunny slope.
It has been great for us to spend time dedicated to together with no grief. For all of the daily whining (sorry Brie) Every day on the slope was perfect! Just a gem!

It's may not look like it but it is a long way down from here! The great thing is how incredible the weather has been this year! Clear sunny warm every single Sunday! And the snow pack is record breaking so.... it basically is not a typically year in Seattle, but no complaining here!
